The Magic Eraser Method
Melamine foam erasers (sold as Magic Erasers or similar) are highly effective on scuff marks and light staining on painted walls. Dampen slightly and rub gently in a circular motion. Test a small hidden area first — on some flat paints they can dull the surface slightly.
Sugar Soap for General Grime
A sugar soap solution (available from hardware stores) wiped with a cloth or sponge removes general grime and grease without damaging most painted surfaces. Wipe down, then follow with a clean damp cloth to remove residue. This is what professional cleaners use for routine wall cleaning.
Touch-Up Paint
For marks that won't come off with cleaning, touch-up paint is the answer. Use the same colour as the existing wall — if you don't have the original paint, try to source a matching colour from a paint store. Apply with a small brush or foam roller to blend in. If the existing paint has faded, a touch-up will be visible — in this case, it may be worth painting the entire wall for consistency.
What's Fair Wear and Tear on Walls
Very minor scuffs and small nail holes from hanging pictures are generally considered fair wear and tear in WA — particularly over a long tenancy. However, significant damage, large holes, or widespread marking is not. When in doubt, clean and touch up rather than leave it and hope for the best.
